English

Drought stress is one of the most important limiting factors affecting the growth and yield of medicinal plants, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Biochar, as a stable organic material, can mitigate the adverse effects of drought by improving the physical and chemical properties of the soil. This study aimed to investigate the effect of different biochar levels (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 t ha⁻¹) on the morphological and physiological characteristics of purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) under three levels of drought stress (irrigation at 40%, 60%, and 80% of field capacity corresponding to severe drought stress, moderate drought stress, and no drought stress, respectively). The experiment was conducted using a factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design with three replications under greenhouse conditions. The results showed that under no stress and moderate stress conditions, biochar levels of 5 and 7.5 t ha⁻¹ had the greatest effect on increasing plant height, shoot and root dry weight, flower number, and improving photosynthetic indices. Under severe drought stress, lower biochar levels (2.5 and 5 t ha⁻¹) were more effective than higher levels (10 t ha⁻¹), withexcessive biochar application under severe drought leading toincreased electrolyte leakage, reduced chlorophyll a/b ratio, and decreased growth. It appears that biochar can enhance the drought tolerance ofE. purpurea by improving soil water retention, increasing nutrient availability, and reducing oxidative stress; however, the application rate should be managed based on the severity of water stress. The application of 5–7.5 t ha⁻¹ of biocharis recommended under no stress and moderate stress conditions, and 2.5–5 t ha⁻¹ under severe drought stress. This study demonstrated that drought stress had significant and negative effectsboth shoot and root growth in E. purpurea, whereas biochar supplementation was capable of largely reducethese negative effects.
