English

Solar radiation is an important variablesin models of energy balance, evapotranspiration, and plant growth simulation. In this research, evaluated the performance of 41 empirical models (10, 7, and 24 models based on solar radiation data, temperature, and other meteorological data, respectively) for estimating daily solar radiation at the Yazd synoptic station from 2006 to 2023was investigated and fixed coefficients of equations were calculated using regression analysis in SPSS software. Data from 2006 to 2020 were used for calibration, and data from 2021 to 2023 were used for model validation. Common evaluation criteria such as Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and the coefficient of determination (R2) were used. The results showed that an empirical model that estimates solar radiation based on meteorological data of average temperature, extraterrestrial radiation, sunshine hours, and maximum sunshine hours showed better results than other models; So that Model No. 34 (Togrul and Onat, 1999), with a coefficient of determination of 0.75, a root mean square error of 1.892, and a mean absolute error of 1.263, achieved the best performance compared to the other empirical models, and models that predict solar radiation based on only the temperature parameter achieved a lower evaluation result than other models. Overall, it can be concluded that multivariable models (hybrid) provide superior performance in estimating solar radiation from meteorological, hydrological, and atmospheric physics viewpoint, because solar radiation reaching the Earth's surface is governed by the simultaneous interaction of multiple atmospheric processes, and a single variable cannot adequately describe all of these processes. On the other hand, although hybrid and machine learning methods often outperform empirical models in terms of accuracy, empirical formulas still achieve satisfactory performance in many cases due to their simplicity.
