Desertification is one of the most significant processes of natural ecosystem degradation in arid and semi-arid regions, posing a serious threat to ecosystem sustainability. Factors related to Water- and climate- play a decisive role in altering the structure and functioning of ecosystems, and their assessment can provide a basis for sustainable natural resource management.th e aim of the present study is to assess and zoning the intensity of desertification in Ardakan County, with emphasis on water and climate indicators, using the Iranian IMDPA model.in this regard, after collecting and preparing the required data, the selected water and climate criteria were converted into spatial layers. spatial interpolation of the criteria was performed using Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) and Radial Basis Function (RBF) methods, and zoning maps for each criteria were prepared. subsequently, the layers were integrated based on the geometric mean, and the final desertification intensity map of the region was produced in accordance with the model framework. the results indicated that, regarding the water indicator, groundwater electrical conductivity, and regarding the climate indicator, precipitation had the greatest impact on desertification in the region. According to the final map, approximately 89.56%of the area, equivalent to 118,037.18 hectares, IS classified as within the moderate desertification class, mainly covering the western parts and portions of the central area. Additionally, 39.99% of the region, with an area of approximately 82,988.85 hectares, is classified under severe desertification, primarily extending across the eastern parts and a small portion of the central area. Overall, the findings indicate an expanding trend of desertification and a gradual decline in the sustainability of the region’s natural ecosystems from the perspective of water and climate indicator.
